QUESTIONS?

Quick answers about booking, services, and what to expect from CJ The Clown.

About us

  • Are CJ The Clown and Dazzling Faces the same team?

Yes — same team, one calendar, one phone number. CJ The Clown handles magic, balloons, and stilts; Dazzling Faces handles face painting and glitter tattoos.

  • I sent you a message and haven't heard back — did you get it?

Our replies occasionally land in the spam / junk folder. Please check there and mark the address as "not spam". If you still can't find it, just WhatsApp or phone us on 060 997 6310 and we'll sort it out.

Balloons & stilts

  • How does walk-about balloon sculpting work?

The balloon twister moves around the venue with a bandolier of balloons and turns out swords, flowers, puppies, parrots, dinosaurs, and whatever else the kids ask for. Comfortable pace is about 20–25 balloons per hour, depending on complexity. Works beautifully alongside face painting at bigger gigs — two queues, two acts, no child standing still.

  • How tall is CJ on stilts, and what does it cost?

About eight to nine feet tall on stilts. CJ needs a small private corner to suit up at the start and end.

Stilt walking is a premium tier — R 1 500 for the first hour, R 900 each extra hour (plus travel). One hour is usually plenty.

Booking

  • How do I book?

The fastest way is WhatsApp on 060 997 6310 — tell us the date, time, venue, and how many kids, and we'll come back with a quote and a hold on the slot. You can also send the contact form if you'd rather write it all out.

  • How far in advance should I book?

Weekends in school terms book up fastest — two to four weeks ahead is comfortable. Holiday seasons (December, Easter, Halloween) and Saturdays in October–November fill earlier; aim for six weeks if your date is in one of those windows. Last-minute is always worth a message — sometimes we have a gap.

  • How much does it cost?

Rates are per performer, per hour for the walk-about acts. The magic show is a flat-rate gig:

Service First hour Each extra hour
    Magic show (30 min) R 1 850 flat
    Balloon sculptor R 1 100 R 610
    Stilt walker (also balloons) R 1 500 R 900
    Face painter R 1 100 R 610
    Glitter tattoo artist R 1 100 R 610

There are also 2-in-1 packages combining the magic show with balloon sculpting:

    Package Includes Max kids Price
    Magic show only 30-min comedy magic R 1 850
    1-hour 2-in-1 30-min show + 30 min balloons 15 R 2 200
    90-min 2-in-1 30-min show + 1 hour balloons 30 R 2 520
    2-hour 2-in-1 30-min show + 1.5 hours balloons 45 R 2 835

Travel fee per performer is added on top, depending on where you are. Materials always included.

We'll always send a formal written quotation so you know the exact total before you commit.

  • Do I pay a deposit, or the full amount?

Full payment up front. The full amount is due by EFT within 48 hours of the invoice date — that's what locks your slot in our calendar. Until payment reflects, the date stays available and could go to another client. Email proof of payment with your invoice number to info@cjtheclown.co.za.

  • Do you charge VAT?

No. We're not VAT-registered, so the price we quote is the price you pay (plus the small per-performer travel fee). Invoices show a VAT line at R 0,00.

Cancellation & travel

  • What's your cancellation and postponement policy?

All payments are non-refundable. We don't offer cancellations or refunds.

    For postponements:

    • 14 days or more before the event: one free postponement to another available date within three months of the original date.
    • Fewer than 14 days before: we can't accommodate a postponement (including for weather) and the full amount is forfeit.

There's one exception: the Consumer Protection Act allows for genuine medical emergencies or bereavement at any time, with proof — Dora handles those personally.

  • What's your travel area?

Based in and serving the Johannesburg and Pretoria area (Gauteng) — Pretoria, Centurion, Joburg, Midrand, and the suburbs in between. As a rule, we don't travel outside Gauteng.

  • What if my event is outside Gauteng?

As a rule, we don't go further. For a substantial booking — several entertainers for a full day, or over a few days — we may be able to make the trip worthwhile. Drop the details on the out-of-area form and we'll let you know whether we can assist.

Magic show

  • What ages does the magic show suit?

Five to ten years is the sweet spot. The comedy is pitched for that age band and the routines have plenty of "everyone shouts the answer" moments. Younger siblings are welcome to watch from a parent's lap; the older kids who insist they "know how it works" tend to be the loudest by the end. When you enquire we'll ask how many children are 5–10 and how many are 4 or younger, so we can recommend the right package.

  • How many kids do the 2-in-1 packages cap at?

The magic show itself seats a comfortable group, but on a 2-in-1 the cap is set by the balloon portion:

    • 1-hour 2-in-1 (30 min show + 30 min balloons) → up to 15 children
    • 90-min 2-in-1 (30 min show + 1 hour balloons) → up to 30 children
    • 2-hour 2-in-1 (30 min show + 1.5 hours balloons) → up to 45 children

For bigger groups, book a longer package or add a second balloon twister.

  • Is the comedy clean?

Yes — pitched so the grandparents and the headmistress can both enjoy it without a wince. No bad language, no innuendo, nothing the parents will have to explain in the car on the way home. Plenty of slapstick, plenty of audience participation, the occasional dad joke for the grown-ups.

On the day

  • How early do you arrive?

Fifteen to twenty minutes before the start time. That's enough to suit up in private (for magic and stilts especially), set up any kit, and have a quick word with you about where the kids will be and when you'd like the act to start.

  • Do you supply all the materials?

Yes — full magic kit, balloons, stilts, costume, the lot. All included in the rate. You don't need to organise anything.

  • What do you need from us at the venue?

For the magic show: somewhere indoor or under proper cover (a few props don't love wind), with room for the kids to sit comfortably in a semicircle. For balloons: open access around the venue. For stilts: indoor or sheltered outdoor on a level surface. A small private corner to suit up at the start is always appreciated. We bring everything else.

  • Can you work outdoors? What about the weather?

Outdoors is great for balloons and stilts. The magic show prefers indoor or under a proper gazebo — a few of the props don't behave in wind. For rain, light drizzle under cover is fine; a proper Highveld storm is not. If the forecast looks rough on the day, we'll talk through moving indoors or postponing — see the cancellation policy for the rules around that.

  • Can I keep you longer on the day?

Often yes — if our schedule allows and the kids are still going strong, just ask. Extra time is invoiced afterwards at the standard hourly rate (with no extra travel fee). The Monday-after invoice settles up.
