CJ the Clown on Goeie More, Good Morning

I had the chance to spend a morning with Rozanne McKenzie and Pieter Koen on Goeie More, Good Morning — the kind of breakfast TV slot you walk into nervous and leave wishing you could go again.

A warm welcome on the couch

Pieter and Rozanne match anyone they put in front of a camera. They were ready for jokes, they were ready for tricks, they were absolutely ready for me to make a balloon animal on air and have it pop. The studio crew were laughing within the first minute and we never really came down from that energy.

Talking about what being a clown actually is

The interview wasn't just about the gigs — it was a proper conversation. We talked about the origins of clowning as a craft, where it sits in the modern family-entertainment landscape, and what it takes to keep an audience of children engaged for thirty minutes at a time.

We covered the practical side too: what clients can expect from a professional kids' entertainer, the difference between punctuality and showing up on time, age-appropriate humour, and why the balloon dog you order at the end is sometimes more important to a six-year-old than the magic trick you opened with.

A few quick tricks happened too. The good kind — the kind that work better when the hosts are leaning in.

Why it mattered

A national TV breakfast show is a different audience to a school fun day or a corporate family event. But the conversation reminded me why this work is worth doing. Clowning, when it is done with care, isn't a novelty. It is a small, deliberate act of getting a room of people to look in the same direction and feel, for a moment, like the day got a little better.

That is what I try to do at every event, large or small. It was nice to talk about it on national TV.
