Every Christmas, Omaramba Holiday Resort fills up with families looking for the kind of festive holiday that does not need a packed schedule. Just sunshine, the pool, and one big afternoon of kid-friendly fun. For several years now, that afternoon has been mine.
A pool-side show on Christmas weekend
The 2024 Christmas show went up on the stage overlooking the pool. Kids climbed out of the water as the music started and crowded the front, towels still around their shoulders. Parents drifted over from the loungers with a drink in hand.
The thirty minutes that follow are always the same shape — comedy, audience participation, a few big visual tricks designed to read from the back row — but the crowd is always different. This one was loud, fast, and very into the punchlines. Two of the kids ended up assistants by accident and stayed there for the full set.
Balloons and face painting after the bows
The entertainment does not stop when the show ends. A professional face painter set up nearby with a Christmas-themed sheet and the queue formed before the brushes were even out. Reindeer, snowflakes, a couple of brave Santas.
Meanwhile I worked through the balloon orders — swords for the older kids, flowers for the parents who had held out, and a few wild animal requests that took a minute to assemble. Watching a balloon dog come together is half the fun of getting one.
Why holiday resorts work for this kind of programme
Resort guests are not on a schedule. You can start a show a little late, take longer between balloon orders, and nobody minds. The whole event flows around what is already a great holiday day, instead of competing with it.
If you are running a resort entertainment programme or a long-weekend family day in Gauteng, a magic show, balloons, and a face painter together cover the full age range and keep the energy up for several hours without overwhelming anyone.
